The workshop

How Patelai started counting

Patelai started in 2016 in Chicago with a teacher and a problem: forty identical folders for forty desks, and nowhere to buy them except one at a time. The first pack we at Patelai put together was fifty plastic folders in one colour, counted by hand into a box. It is still in the catalogue.

Everything since has followed the same idea. A thing a room needs in multiples, packed in the number the room needs, with the count on the front. Tumblers for a team, sponges for a salon, lanyards for a conference, lick bowls for a kennel.

The first job on any new pack is still the same as it was in 2016: open the box and count. If the count on the label and the count in the box disagree, the pack does not go into the Patelai lineup until they do.

Per piece

Why the price per piece is on every page

A hundred-pack at fourteen dollars and a thirty-pack at six look like two different products. Per piece, they are fourteen cents and twenty cents, and that is the number that decides which one a classroom should buy. So the per-piece figure is printed under the pack price on every page, worked out from the count the maker states.

It cuts the other way too. A big pack is not always the better buy: two hundred passport sleeves for a family of four is a drawer of plastic. The Patelai way is to print the number and let the room decide.

What we do not promise

The maker's words stay the maker's

When a page says BPA free, dishwasher safe or waterproof, that is the maker speaking, and the page marks it so. When a page gives a count, a size in inches or a material, that is the label on the box. The two are never mixed, and a claim we cannot see on the label does not appear at all.

What a bulk pack will not do is match the set you already own, arrive in a colour the photograph does not show, or split by size. We write that down rather than leaving it to a return.
